Purpose:

To evaluate the success rate and complications ofAhmed Glaucoma Valve(AGV) insertionduring a follow up of at least 5 years.

Methods:

In this retrospective case series study, patients with 5 years of follow up after Ahmed Glaucoma Valve insertion were enrolled. Exclusion criteria were incomplete postoperative medical recordsand ocular surgeries other than glaucoma surgery in the follow up period. Success was defined as IOP < 21 mm Hg (criterion A) and IOP < 16 mm Hg (criterion B), with at least 20% reduction in IOP, either with no medication (complete success) or with no more than 2 medications (qualified success). Cumulative success was defined as sum of qualified and complete success.

Results:

This study included 40 eyes of 40 patients withmean age of 40.63± 22.91years, (range 1 to 88). cumulative surviaval success rates of 90% , 73% at 1 and 5 years according to criterion A and 42% ,25% based on criterion B with the median survival time of 60 months and 22.36 months respectively.

Conclusion:

The wide difference of success rate between criterion A and B in this study suggest more emphasize on considering lower IOP as cut off for success description.
